There’s no shortage of opportunities to feel like we aren’t doing very well. Let’s put those aside for a moment (five minutes, actually) and focus on what we’re doing well. This strength-based approach is the foundation of positive psychology, which is devoted to researching how humans and communities thrive. Practicing self-care means that we need to acknowledge what we are doing well so that we can leverage that positive energy to keep grinding. Because focusing on what we aren't’ doing well is exhausting and drags us down.
Today, grab a piece of paper and a pen. Set a timer for five minutes. Then start to write down things that you are doing well. Start small. Did you shower today and/or eat breakfast? If so, great! Are you nice to other people, did you complete items on your to-do list, and/or are you being a good friend/parent/partner? What about your roles at work/home/community, how are you doing well there? Stick it out for the entire five minutes. Ideas will flow once you get into it. Keep the paper around for the rest of the day.
